When many people think about comic conventions (known as comic con) or other niche conventions like anime, cartoons, and gaming, they often dismiss the events as not being for them. Some may even have preconceived cynical notions about "geeks" and "nerds" being the only types of people who can enjoy such events.

However, these stereotypes and misconceptions are what keep so many people from being able to enjoy some of the many delights that events like comic con have to offer. So, get to know some of the information you didn't know about comic con and find out what you've been missing all these years. 

Comic Books Are Not Just for Kids & Nerds

If you have never read a comic book before, head to your local bookstore, magazine vendor, or even library and just flip through one or two that seem interesting. Chances are you will enjoy yourself in the process, and maybe even find something you love. 

Going to comic con will allow you to explore these stories and various offerings better. Vendors and collectors come together and bring in their favorite comics and graphic novels. You can browse through locally-created comics, rare classics, and everything in between. Not to mention, you can meet and talk with experts who can guide you to more books that suit your tastes 

Many TV Shows & Movies You Love Are Based on Comics

You may be surprised at how many movies and television shows are based on or inspired by comic books. And in some cases, films and TV shows have inspired an entire comic book series. 

One of the best known and most popular examples of a graphic novel series being turned into a television series is The Walking Dead. This popular zombie apocalypse show is based on the graphic novel series of the same name. Others include virtually any superhero movie or TV show, many horror and sci-fi movies, and even critically acclaimed dramas. 

So, before you think that comic books and comic con are not for you, take a look at the movies and TV shows you love. Most likely one or more are based on comics. At comic con, speakers and guests who starred in or directed comic-related movies and shows are often guests, along with comic book authors, illustrators, and the like. You can learn trade secrets and even get sneak peaks of upcoming works.
